Branding 101

All of these are different ways to describe someone who has mastered their personal branding. Branding is the clear expression of who you are and what you stand for. It’s what separates you from the pack and shows people why you’re different. A well-defined personal brand identity, with clear messaging to back it up, is absolutely crucial if you want to become, or continue to be, a resource media turns to for commentary.

Here are a few things to consider in creating or testing the strength of your personal brand for media:

  • What separates you from your competitors, in the marketplace as well as in the media?
  • Why should media talk to you as opposed to the other experts in your field?
  • Google yourself – is what you find consistent with your brand? If not, how can you change it?
  • Does your brand identity support your short and long-term goals?
